Also known as tree onions and perennial onions, the plants produce bulbs at both the top and bottom of the plant. When the bluish-green stalk gets top-heavy, the stalk fall over, creating new roots and a new plant where the bulbs touch the ground. One Egyptian walking onion plant can travel about 2 to 3 feet every year, resulting in up to 8 new plants.
The ideal planting time for growing walking onions is between summer and the first frost for a harvest the next growing season. Set the onion bulbs in the soil about 2 inches deep about 6 inches between each bulb. - In the Kitchen: Use them fresh, or store them for later use.
