An early heirloom variety introduced in 1897 by Peter Henderson & Company. Black Valentine Beans are deep green, about 6” long pods & stringless. A great dual purpose variety, make a fresh snap bean and if allowed to dry, the dark black beans make an excellent nutty flavor soup. A bush variety plant that doesn’t need any support or trellis.

Growing tips

  • Direct sow between end of May to mid-June when the outside temperature is warm, dry spell.  Beans requires a soil temperature in the range of 60° F - 75° F. Note, seeds may rot if the soil is not warm enough. Also, seeds will not germinate properly if sowed too deeply or too early in cold wet ground.
  • Bean prefer well worked rich, loose and well-drained soil, ideally between 5.5-6.8 pH.
