This variety is a vigorous grower with a long growing season. Expect continuous harvest from early summer to fall in colder regions and even longer in warmer regions.

Swiss chard is typically grown as a cool-season crop because it grows best in the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. However, chard is quite tolerant of hotter temperatures, too. Its growth will slow down in summer, but chard’s higher heat tolerance makes it a great salad green to grow when it gets too hot out for others.

Directly-sow seeds about 2-3 weeks before the last spring frost. In more temperate regions, start chard seeds indoors in April. In southern climates, chard can overwinter. Sow in early fall and apply mulch in order to keep plants cool. Gradually harden the seedlings before transplanting outside. These plants prefer rich, loose and well-drained soil with a pH level of 6.0 - 7.0. Plant seeds about 1/2 inch deep, 6 – 8 inches apart and 12-18 inches between rows to allow sufficient room for full growth. Thinning is necessary since they produce multiple plants at a time. Germination usually takes about 1-2 weeks and the pot should be evenly moist. Chard thrives in full sun, but can withstand partial shade. Harvest the mature leaves first to help their “cut and come back” regrowth. Chard plants can overwinter in southern climates, where this variety is planted as a biennial.
